FAQ
Growing kit questions
Clear answers for setup, growing, harvesting, and troubleshooting.
How do I start my mushroom grow kit?
Open the bag and make the cut shown in the included instructions. Mist the exposed area consistently, then place the kit in bright indirect light with regular fresh air.
What if I cannot start the kit immediately?
Start the kit soon after it arrives for the best experience. Until then, keep it unopened in a cool place away from direct sunlight and heat. Contact us if you expect a longer delay.
What comes with my mushroom grow kit?
Each kit includes a ready-to-grow mushroom block in its grow bag, printed growing instructions, and a spray bottle.
What is the growing substrate made from?
The grow block is made with organic agricultural growing materials selected to support oyster mushroom mycelium. The block arrives fully colonized and ready to fruit.
Why do I cut an X in the grow bag?
The X creates a controlled fruiting opening. It lets you mist the exposed block while the plastic flaps help retain moisture around the growing surface.
What if I accidentally cut off the plastic flaps?
The kit can still grow, but the exposed area may dry faster. Loosely place a clean clear bag with several air holes over the block as a humidity tent. Remove or lift it for misting and provide regular fresh air.
How much of the exposed surface should I scrape?
Follow the instructions included with your kit. If they direct you to scrape, gently roughen only the exposed surface with a clean fork. Do not dig deeply into or break apart the block.
Where should I place the kit?
Choose a spot with bright indirect light and regular fresh air. Keep the kit away from direct sunlight, heaters, and strong air-conditioning vents, which can dry the block.
What temperature works best?
Pink oyster mushrooms prefer warmer conditions. White and Brown oyster mushrooms generally perform well in moderate indoor temperatures. Cooler conditions can slow growth, while excessive heat or dryness can reduce humidity.
Is the white or light pink fuzzy growth mold?
White or light pink fuzzy growth is usually healthy mushroom mycelium. If you notice an unusual green or black color, a strong unpleasant odor, or anything that concerns you, stop and contact us with a clear photo before using the kit.
How often should I mist the kit?
Mist consistently so the exposed surface stays moist but not waterlogged. Dry homes may require more frequent misting. Follow the included instructions and adjust based on how quickly the surface dries.
What should I do if mushrooms grow along the side of the bag?
Small amounts of side growth can happen. Do not make additional openings, because that can dry the block. Continue caring for the intended opening and contact support with a photo if a large cluster becomes trapped inside the bag.
What should I do if I am traveling?
Ask someone to mist the kit while you are away. Consistent moisture is especially important after pins appear because the mushrooms can develop quickly.
What will the mushrooms look like as they grow?
The surface may look unchanged at first. Small pins typically appear around days 7–10, then expand quickly into a clustered shape. Check the kit daily once pins appear because oyster mushrooms can mature rapidly.
How long does it take to grow mushrooms?
Pins typically appear around days 7–10. The first harvest is usually ready around days 10–14, depending on temperature, humidity, airflow, and daily care.
What should I do if I do not see pins by day 10?
Keep the exposed area moist and review the temperature, humidity, light, and airflow. Growing times vary, and cooler or drier conditions can delay pinning. Contact growing support if conditions seem correct and the kit remains inactive.
How should I care for the kit in a hot or dry home?
Check the exposed surface more often and mist whenever it begins to dry. Keep the kit away from direct sun and air-conditioning vents. A clean humidity tent or a nearby humidifier can help, but the kit still needs regular fresh air.
What kinds of mushrooms do Forest Origins kits grow?
Forest Origins currently offers Pink, White, and Brown oyster mushroom grow kits, along with variety 2-packs and a three-variety Trio.
What do oyster mushrooms taste like?
Oyster mushrooms have a savory, mild flavor and a tender-to-firm texture depending on the variety and cooking method. They work well in pasta, tacos, soups, rice bowls, stir-fries, and other cooked dishes.
How do I know when to harvest?
Harvest the full cluster when the caps have opened but before the edges curl significantly upward or release heavy spores. Grip the cluster near the base and gently twist or pull it away from the block.
How should I store harvested oyster mushrooms?
For the best quality, cook them soon after harvest. Refrigerate unwashed mushrooms in a paper bag or another breathable container and use them within several days. Discard mushrooms that become slimy or develop an unpleasant odor.
Are the mushrooms edible?
Oyster mushrooms are edible when grown and handled properly. Cook them thoroughly before eating. Do not consume mushrooms that appear spoiled or have an unusual odor.
What can I cook with oyster mushrooms?
Cook them thoroughly, then use them in stir-fries, tacos, pasta, soups, pizzas, rice bowls, sandwiches, or as a savory side dish.
How much can one kit produce?
With consistent care, the first flush can potentially yield up to 0.5 lb of fresh mushrooms. Results vary with temperature, humidity, airflow, and daily care.
Why was my first harvest smaller than expected?
Yield varies with temperature, humidity, airflow, moisture, and daily care. Review the growing conditions before another flush and contact support with photos if the first harvest was unusually small.
Can the kit produce another harvest?
Additional flushes may be possible with continued care. They usually take longer and are often smaller than the first harvest.
What should I do if the mushrooms become dry?
Drying usually means the cluster was harvested late or humidity was too low. If the mushrooms are clean, smell normal, and show no signs of spoilage, they may still be cooked thoroughly. When uncertain, do not eat them and contact support with a photo.
What does the grow guarantee cover?
Your first harvest is guaranteed when the included directions are followed. If the kit does not grow, contact us with your order information, photos of the kit, and details about the growing conditions so we can help.
